518430-02 - ACM

Case IH 518430-02 - ACM – ACM: Air conditioning max defrost switch circuit fault

Issue description

Indicates an electrical circuit malfunction—such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power—in the switch that commands the maximum defrost function for the cab's HVAC system.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Quadtrac AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Puma AFS Connect Series

Check the cause

  1. Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as Case IH EST or Jaltest) to read the ACM failure memory and monitor the live state of the Max Defrost switch.

  2. Inspect the physical condition of the Max Defrost switch on the Multicontroller armrest for sticking, physical damage, or liquid intrusion.

  3. Check the wiring harness and connectors between the Max Defrost switch and the Armrest Control Module (ACM) for pinched wires, loose pins, or corrosion.

  4. Verify that the ACM is receiving proper 12V input voltage and that the 5-volt reference circuits within the armrest are within normal limits.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical shorts during disassembly.

  2. Access the Armrest Controls

Carefully remove the trim panels on the Multicontroller armrest to access the internal wiring and the back of the HVAC/defrost switch panel.

  3. Test the Switch

Disconnect the electrical connector at the Max Defrost switch. Use a multimeter to test the switch for proper continuity when toggled on and off. If the switch fails the continuity test, it must be replaced.

  4. Test the Harness

If the switch tests good, perform a continuity and short-to-ground test on the wiring harness running from the switch connector back to the 17-pin connector assignments on the ACM. Repair any damaged wiring.

  5. Reassembly

Install the new switch or repaired harness. Reconnect the armrest trim panels and the battery.

  6. Clear and Verify

Turn the key on, connect the diagnostic tool, and clear the 518430-02 fault code from the ACM. Start the tractor and engage the Max Defrost switch to ensure the air conditioning compressor and blower respond correctly without the code returning.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Air Conditioning Max Defrost Switch / Armrest HVAC Switch Panel

On many AFS Connect armrests, individual switches may not be serviced separately and may require replacing the integrated control panel sub-assembly.

  • Armrest Control Module (ACM) ECU

    48068685

Electronic Control Unit for Armrest Control Module, 12V, 17 connector assignments. Only replace the ACM if the switch and wiring harness have been conclusively proven to be fully functional and the module itself is failing to process the circuit.
