518431-09 - ACM

Case IH 518431-09 - ACM – ACM: Multi function handle disconnected while powered on

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the control system has detected an open circuit or a sudden loss of communication with the Multi-Function Handle (MFH) while the tractor's key switch and electrical system were powered on.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check Fuses: Verify the power supply to the Armrest Control Module. Check the unswitched battery power fuse (e.g., F-014 10A) and the switched battery power fuse (e.g., F-063 10A).

  2. Inspect the MFH Connector: The most common cause of this code is a loose connection. Remove the armrest trim and inspect the main electrical connector at the base of the Multi-Function Handle. Ensure it is fully seated and the locking tab is engaged.

  3. Wiring Harness Inspection: Check the wiring harness running from the MFH down to the ACM. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the armrest frame, or pulled wires caused by adjusting the armrest position.

  4. Pin Drag Test: Disconnect the MFH and ACM connectors and check for pushed-out pins, spread terminals, or corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and turn off the master battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Armrest Internals

Remove the retaining screws holding the upper plastic trim and side panels of the right-hand armrest console.

  3. Disconnect the Handle

Locate the wiring pigtail at the base of the Multi-Function Handle. Depress the release tab and disconnect the handle from the armrest harness.

  4. Test or Replace

If the wiring harness tested good for continuity and no physical damage was found, the internal circuitry of the Multi-Function Handle has likely failed. Remove the mounting hardware securing the handle to the armrest frame and install the replacement handle.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring it clicks into place. Route the wiring carefully so it will not be pinched when the armrest is adjusted. Reinstall the armrest trim panels.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Turn on the battery disconnect and power up the tractor. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab display (Pro 700 / Pro 1200) to clear the inactive 518431-09 fault code. You may need to perform an end-of-line calibration for the new handle so the ACM recognizes the new component's encoder positions.
