Case IH 518431-14 - ACM – ACM: Multi-Function Handle (MFH) position sensor mismatch or incorrect configuration
Issue description
The system detects that the sensor reading from the MFH does not match the expected configuration, or there is a communication mismatch between the handle's physical position and what the control module is reading.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum series (including AFS Connect models, 235-340 series)
- Steiger
- Puma
- Axial-Flow series (e.g., 7230, 8230, 9230, and 240 series)
Check the cause
Verify the Multi-Function Handle is physically resting in the correct neutral detent.
Inspect the wiring harness and the 34-cavity female connector (C054M) at the ACM for loose wires, backed-out pins, or corrosion.
Monitor the MFH position sensor voltage and encoder position using the AFS Pro 700 / Pro 1200 display or EST for erratic voltage drops.
Attempt to recalibrate the Multi-Function Handle through the display's calibration menu to see if the ACM can relearn the handle's configuration.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the armrest module.
Access the ACM and MFH
Remove the retaining screws on the Global Arm Rest Unit (GARU) console cover to expose the internal wiring, the Armrest Control Module (ACM), and the base of the Multi-Function Handle.
Test the Harness
Disconnect the harness from the MFH and the ACM. Use a multimeter to check for continuity and ensure there are no shorts to ground in the wiring between the handle and the module.
Replace the Handle
If the wiring is intact and calibration fails, the internal position sensor of the MFH is faulty. The sensor is typically integrated into the handle base. Unbolt the MFH assembly from the armrest, disconnect its dedicated harness, and install the replacement handle.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect all harnesses and reinstall the armrest cover. Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the Pro 700/1200 display or EST to perform a mandatory calibration of the new Multi-Function Handle so the ACM recognizes the new sensor's baseline and configuration.
