Case IH 518431-19 - ACM – ACM: Multi function handle position disconnected

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the control module has lost the position signal or communication with the Multi-Function Handle (MFH). The system is unable to detect the physical position or inputs of the joystick/handle, which controls critical machine functions like transmission shifting, lifting, tilting, and remote hydraulics.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 180-340
  • Magnum 260
  • Magnum 290
  • Steiger 400
  • Steiger 500
  • Quadtrac 550
  • Puma 175 CVX
  • Mid-Range Rotary Combines

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the vehicle and perform a full scan for DTCs to see if related voltage codes (e.g., 18008 or 18009 for MFH voltage too low/high) are present.

  2. Remove the armrest cover and disassemble the armrest to access the internal wiring.

  3. Inspect all electrical connections and wiring harnesses between the Multi-Function Handle and the Armrest Control Module (ACM). Look for loose pins, backed-out wires, or corrosion.

  4. Verify that the ACM is receiving proper 12V power and that the 5-volt reference signals to the armrest potentiometers/encoders are within limits.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect battery power to prevent electrostatic discharge damage to the modules.

  2. Disassemble Armrest

Carefully remove the armrest housing to expose the Multi-Function Handle base and the ACM.

  3. Secure Connections

Disconnect, clean, and firmly reconnect the wiring harness linking the MFH to the ACM. Ensure the locking tabs on the connectors click into place.

  4. Component Replacement (If Necessary)

If the wiring is secure and undamaged but the fault remains active, the internal encoder/circuitry of the Multi-Function Handle has likely failed and the handle must be replaced. In rarer cases, the ACM itself may be the culprit.

  5. Reassembly

    Reassemble the armrest components.

  6. Clear and Test

Reconnect the EST, clear the DTCs, and test drive the unit for at least 20 minutes while operating the MFH to confirm the repair is successful.
