518434-09 - ACM

Case IH 518434-09 - ACM – ACM: Multi function handle keypad disconnected while powered on

Issue description

This code indicates that the control module lost communication with or detected a physical disconnection of the Multi-Function Handle (MFH) keypad while the tractor's key switch was in the ON position. This is typically caused by a loose connector, a wiring harness interruption within the armrest, or an internal failure of the joystick's keypad circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series (Magnum 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac AFS Connect Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the Multi-Function Handle (MFH) and its backlit keypad buttons for physical damage

  2. Check the wiring beneath the armrest console and the connector linking the MFH keypad to the ACM for backed-out pins, loose connections, or chafed wires

  3. Verify power and ground to the ACM by checking fuses F-014 (Unswitched B+) and F-063 (Switched B+)

  4. Connect the Case IH EST diagnostic tool to monitor ACM live data, checking if the MFH keypad state toggles when the joystick or wiring is wiggled

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts while working on the armrest modules.

  2. Access the ACM

Carefully remove the trim panels on the Multicontroller armrest to expose the Armrest Control Module and the wiring harness routing for the Multi-Function Handle.

  3. Reseat Connections

Disconnect the main harness connector for the MFH keypad. Inspect the pins for corrosion or fretting. Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner, allow it to dry, and firmly reconnect the harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If any wires between the MFH and the ACM are pinched or broken, repair the wiring using OEM-approved splicing methods or replace the armrest sub-harness.

  5. Component Replacement

If the wiring and connections are perfectly intact but the fault remains active (indicating an internal failure of the keypad circuit board), remove the mounting screws securing the Multi-Function Handle to the armrest and replace the MFH assembly.

  6. Reassembly & Calibration

Reinstall all armrest trim panels. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

Turn the key on and use the AFS Pro 1200 display or the EST tool to clear the inactive 518434-09 fault code. Test all configurable buttons on the MFH to ensure proper operation.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Multi-Function Handle (MFH) / Multicontroller Joystick Assembly

Configuration dependent. Must match the transmission type (CVXDrive or PowerDrive) and the AFS Connect armrest generation.
