Case IH 518584-06 - UCM – UCM: Brake assisted steering cut off valve solenoid current high

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical current flowing through the circuit for the Brake-Assisted Steering (BAS) cut-off valve solenoid is higher than the specified operating range. This typically indicates a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted internal solenoid coil, or a failure within the valve assembly.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Brake-Assisted Steering wire harness (jumper harness and main harness routing to the UCM) for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the BAS cut-off valve solenoid at the PTO/Differential valve block and check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Measure the resistance across the solenoid pins using a multimeter (should be approximately 7.3 Ohms). If the resistance is extremely low or shows continuity to the solenoid casing, the internal coil is shorted.

  4. Disconnect the harness at the UCM and at the solenoid. Check for continuity between the power supply wire and the tractor chassis ground to isolate a harness short.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for service

    Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Locate valve assembly

    Locate the PTO / Differential Valve assembly, which houses the Brake-Assisted Steering (BAS) solenoids and pressure sensors.

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the Brake Assisted Steering BAS LH Solenoid.

  4. Remove retaining cover

    Remove the solenoid retaining cover (and any hex socket mounting screws) securing the actuator to the valve body.

  5. Remove faulty solenoid

    Remove the faulty PWM solenoid from the valve block. Be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid.

  6. Install new solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic oil and install it into the valve body.

  7. Reinstall retaining cover

    Reinstall the retaining cover and torque the hex socket screws to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect electrical components

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the tractor battery.

  9. Clear fault codes

    Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or use the AFS Pro 1200 display to clear the UCM fault codes.

  10. Verify repair

    Start the tractor and perform a tight headland turn to engage the brake-assisted steering system (which automatically applies the inside rear brake) to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
