Case IH 518585-06 - UCM – UCM: Brake assisted steering left solenoid current high.

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical current (amperage) flowing through the circuit for the Left Hand (LH) Brake Assisted Steering (BAS) solenoid is exceeding the maximum specified limit. This typically indicates a short circuit to ground within the wiring harness, a shorted internal solenoid coil, or a failed driver inside the control module.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Brake Assisted Steering valve block for visible damage, chafing, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Solenoid Resistance Test: Disconnect the electrical connector from the LH BAS solenoid. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. The OEM specification for this 12V DC PWM solenoid is 7.3 Ohms. If the reading is 0 ohms or significantly lower than 7.3 ohms, the solenoid coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  3. Harness Isolation Test: With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key on and check the current/voltage on the circuit. If the system still registers a 'current high' fault with the load unplugged, the short is located in the wiring harness or the UCM itself, not the solenoid.

  4. Connector Pin-Fit: Inspect the UCM and solenoid connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or backed-out pins that could cause electrical arcing or intermittent shorts.

Repair steps

  1. Power down tractor

    Power down the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Locate valve block

    Locate the Brake Assisted Steering (BAS) valve block assembly on the chassis.

  3. Disconnect solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty LH BAS PWM solenoid.

  4. Remove retaining cover

    Remove the solenoid retaining cover/nut.

  5. Remove faulty coil

    Slide the faulty electric actuator solenoid coil off the valve spool.

  6. Install new solenoid

    Install the new PWM solenoid (and replace any associated O-rings on the valve body if the cartridge was removed).

  7. Reinstall retaining cover

    Reinstall the solenoid retaining cover and torque to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect electrical connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the weather seal is intact and the locking tab clicks into place.

  9. Clear fault code

    Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use the AFS Pro display or a diagnostic service tool to clear the stored 518585-06 fault code.

  10. Test operation

    Test operate the tractor to confirm the brake-assisted steering functions normally and the code does not return.
