Case IH 518586-06 - UCM – UCM: Brake assisted steering right solenoid current high

The control module has detected that the electrical current on the circuit for the right-hand Brake Assisted Steering (BAS) PWM solenoid is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold. This is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground, a short to battery/power, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself causing it to draw excessive amperage.

   Locate the Brake Assisted Steering valve block and visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the right BAS solenoid for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the harness at the right BAS solenoid and check the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the right BAS solenoid and compare it to the left BAS solenoid. Near-zero resistance indicates an internal short.

   With the solenoid and UCM disconnected, test the harness wires for continuity to ground and continuity to each other to check for a harness short.

   Prepare machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate valve assembly

   Locate the Brake Assisted Steering (BAS) valve assembly.

   Disconnect solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the right-hand PWM solenoid.

   Repair wiring

   If the diagnostic tests pointed to a wiring issue, repair the shorted section of the harness or replace the BAS jumper harness.

   Remove solenoid retaining nut

   If the solenoid coil is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut or cover holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem.

   Remove old solenoid coil

   Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: You typically do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the valve cartridge itself just to replace the electrical coil, preventing fluid loss).

   Install new solenoid coil

   Slide the new PWM solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut/cover.

   Reconnect connector

   Reconnect the electrical connector.

   Clear fault code

   Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use the AFS Pro display (or a diagnostic tool) to clear the inactive 518586-06 fault code.

    Test drive

    Test drive the tractor and perform right-hand headland turns to engage the brake-assisted steering and verify the code does not return.
