Case IH 518595-03 - ACM – ACM: Front hitch working position voltage high
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the front hitch position sensor (a rotary potentiometer) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold (typically above 4.5V on a 5V reference circuit). This usually indicates that the sensor's signal wire is shorted to a high voltage source (like the 5V reference or 12V battery), the sensor has lost its ground connection (open ground circuit causing the voltage to float high), or the internal track of the potentiometer has failed.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the front hitch rockshaft/pivot area for visible rubbing, cuts, or pinched wires that could cause a short to power.
Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, bent terminals, or water ingress, which can bridge the 5V reference to the signal wire.
Ground Circuit Test: Using a multimeter, test the sensor ground wire (typically Pin 1) for continuity to the chassis or module ground. An open ground is the most common cause of an FMI 3 'voltage high' code.
Voltage Reference Test: Turn the key ON and measure the VREF wire (typically Pin 3). It should read a steady 5V. If it reads 12V, there is a short to battery power in the harness.
Signal Wire Test: Measure the signal wire (typically Pin 2) with the sensor disconnected. It should not have voltage. If it does, the signal wire is shorted to a power source in the harness.
Repair steps
Power down machine
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the sensor
Locate the front hitch position potentiometer, which is mounted on the front hitch assembly near the rockshaft pivot point.
Remove the sensor
Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector. Remove the mounting hardware (usually two M5 or M6 bolts) and the linkage/ring connecting the sensor arm to the hitch.
Install the new sensor
Mount the replacement potentiometer and attach the linkage. Secure the mounting bolts (do not overtighten, as the plastic housing can crack).
Reconnect electrical and battery
Plug the 3-pin wiring harness back into the sensor and reconnect the tractor's battery.
Calibrate the front hitch
Perform a Front Hitch Calibration via the tractor's display monitor or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) so the ACM can learn the new minimum (lowered) and maximum (raised) voltage limits of the potentiometer.
Clear codes and test
Clear the 518595-03 fault code from the ACM memory and test the front hitch operation to verify the repair.
