Case IH 518710-02 - ACM – ACM: Headland management system play switch circuit fault

Issue description

Electrical circuit malfunction (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power) specifically affecting the playback/step switch used to activate the recorded Headland Management Control (HMC) sequences.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger AFS Connect
  • Quadtrac AFS Connect
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Optum

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Headland Management play switch (located on the Multicontroller propulsion handle or the armrest control panel) for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing it from returning to its neutral position.

  2. Use the AFS Pro 700 or Pro 1200 display diagnostic menu to monitor the live status of the switch. Press the switch to see if the ACM registers the state change.

  3. Disconnect the switch/handle harness and use a multimeter to check for continuity across the switch terminals when pressed.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Multicontroller handle and the Armrest Control Module (ACM) for pinched wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during disassembly.

  2. Access the Switch

Carefully remove the trim panels on the Multicontroller armrest to access the base of the multifunction handle and its wiring harness.

  3. Disconnect and Isolate

Unplug the electrical connector linking the multifunction handle/switch assembly to the ACM harness.

  4. Test or Replace

If the multimeter continuity test confirms the switch is internally failed (always open or always closed), the switch or the entire multifunction handle must be replaced (on many modern Case IH models, the switches are integrated into the handle assembly and cannot be serviced individually).

  5. Wiring Repair

If the switch tests good, trace the circuit back to the ACM. Repair any broken wires or replace damaged connector pins.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the harnesses and reassemble the armrest trim.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the AFS display to clear the inactive fault code. Test the Headland Management System playback function in the field or on the stand to verify the repair.
