518858-04 - VCM

Case IH 518858-04 - VCM – VCM: 12VU1 supply voltage low

Issue description

The system is detecting that the voltage on the 12VU1 power rail has dropped below the normal operating limit (typically below 8V).

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 315
  • Magnum 340
  • Steiger AFS Connect
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • SR130-SR270
  • TR270-TR320
  • TV380
  • Pro 1200

Check the cause

  1. Check the 20-amp fuse for the 12VU1 circuit (e.g., Block 3B, Fuse F-021 on Magnum/Steiger tractors)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the VCM to the EDC lift coils or drive pump solenoids for shorts to ground, chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation

  3. Test the EDC raise/lower coils or pump forward solenoids for internal shorts by measuring their resistance with a multimeter

  4. Check the VCM/UCM harness connectors for moisture ingress, corrosion, or pushed-out pins causing high resistance

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable.

  2. Locate and Inspect the Fuse

Access the main fuse/relay panel. Locate the 20A fuse for the 12VU1 circuit. If it is blown, proceed to step 3. If it is intact, the issue is likely a wiring break or severe corrosion causing a voltage drop.

  3. Isolate the Circuit

Disconnect the wiring harness at the VCM and at the implement solenoids (EDC coils or pump solenoids).

  4. Check for Ground Shorts

Using a multimeter set to continuity/ohms, probe the 12VU1 power wire against the machine chassis. If there is continuity, trace the harness to find and repair the short to ground.

  5. Test the Actuators

Test the resistance of the disconnected solenoids. If a solenoid reads out of OEM spec (usually very low ohms indicating an internal short), replace the solenoid.

  6. Repair and Reassemble

Repair any damaged wiring using weather-sealed splices. Replace the blown fuse. Reconnect the VCM and solenoids.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the diagnostic display to clear the inactive 518858-04 code. Operate the rear hitch (or drive pumps) to verify the code does not return.
