Case IH 518859-04 - VCM – VCM: 12VU2 supply voltage low
Issue description
The control module has detected that the input voltage on the specific power rail designated as "12VU2" has dropped below the acceptable operational threshold.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum AFS Connect
- Case IH Steiger AFS Connect
- Case IH Axial-Flow Combines
- Case IH Skid Steer Loaders (SSL) and Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
Check the cause
Verify System Voltage: Check the machine's batteries and alternator output to ensure the baseline system voltage is healthy (typically 12.5V resting, 13.5V+ running).
Check the 12VU2 Fuse: Locate the specific fuse protecting the 12VU2 circuit (F-019 (10A) on Steiger AFS Connect, F-028 (15A) on Axial-Flow 7250).
Inspect Solenoids on the Circuit: Disconnect components to see if the voltage returns to normal (Loaders: Park Brake Solenoid; Combines: Distributor solenoid and right-side vertical knife solenoid/relay).
Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the fuse panel, the VCM, and the end-components for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion that could cause high resistance or a short-to-ground.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and turn off the battery disconnect switch.
Fuse Replacement
If the 12VU2 fuse (e.g., F-019 or F-028) is blown, replace it with a new fuse of the exact same amperage rating.
Trace and Repair Wiring
If the new fuse blows immediately upon key-on, or if the fuse is intact but voltage at the VCM is still low, use a multimeter to trace the 12VU2 wire from the VCM connector to the associated solenoids. Repair any damaged sections of the wiring harness.
Component Replacement
If the wiring is intact but a specific solenoid (like the park brake solenoid) is internally shorted and pulling the rail voltage down, replace the faulty solenoid.
VCM Testing
If the fuse is good, the wiring has continuity with no shorts to ground, and the solenoids test within specification, the VCM itself may have an internal fault on the 12VU2 power plane.
Clear Codes
Reconnect battery power, cycle the key, and use the diagnostic display or a service tool to clear the inactive 518859-04 code. Verify the repair by operating the machine functions tied to the 12VU2 rail.
Parts you might need
(4)Blade fuse
Standard automotive blade fuses (10 Amp or 15 Amp, depending on the specific machine's fuse block).
Case IH Vehicle Control Module
OEM Part numbers vary entirely based on the machine's Product Identification Number (PIN) and configuration.
Park Brake Solenoid
Exact OEM part numbers require the specific machine model and serial number.
