Case IH 518861-12 - BCM – BCM: ATC Heater Control Valve Actuator Permanent Electrical Defect

Indicates a permanent electrical defect in the ATC (Automatic Temperature Control) heater control valve actuator. The control module has detected a hard electrical failure in this circuit, such as a short to ground, an open circuit, or a completely failed internal actuator motor, preventing the valve from cycling properly. When this occurs, the ATC display will typically illuminate a 'book icon' indicating a system malfunction alongside the fault code.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the ATC water valve for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Use a multimeter to verify that the BCM/ATC controller is sending the proper voltage and ground signals to the valve's connector.

   Use a diagnostic scan tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic interface) to manually command the actuator to cycle. Listen/feel for the actuator motor attempting to move.

   Measure the resistance of the heater control valve actuator itself to determine if the internal motor is shorted or open.

   Turn off machine and disconnect battery

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Locate heater control valve

   Locate the heater control valve assembly inline with the cab heater hoses.

   Disconnect electrical connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the valve actuator.

   Clamp off heater hoses

   Clamp off the 5/8" heater hoses on both sides of the valve to prevent excessive engine coolant loss.

   Remove hoses

   Loosen the hose clamps and remove the hoses from the defective valve assembly.

   Remove old valve

   Remove any mounting hardware and extract the old valve.

   Install new valve

   Install the new heater control valve assembly and secure it.

   Reattach hoses

   Reattach the heater hoses and securely tighten the hose clamps.

   Reconnect electrical connector

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new actuator.

    Remove hose clamps

    Remove the hose clamps.

    Reconnect battery and top off coolant

    Reconnect the battery, top off the engine coolant to replace any lost fluid, and bleed the cooling system.

    Clear fault codes and verify operation

    Clear the inactive fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool and run the ATC system to verify proper temperature regulation.
