Case IH 518865-06 - BCM – BCM: ATC defrost vent door actuator - over temperature
Issue description
The actuator motor responsible for opening and closing the defrost vent door within the Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) system is experiencing an over-temperature condition. This is typically caused by the actuator drawing excessive electrical current due to a physically jammed mode door, a short in the wiring, or internal failure of the actuator motor itself.

Check the cause
Check for physical binding: Manually inspect the defrost vent door (mode door) linkage. If the door is physically jammed by debris or warped plastics, the actuator will overwork and overheat.
Wiring and circuit test: Inspect the wiring harness between the BCM and the defrost actuator. Look for chafed wires causing a short to ground or high resistance.
Software verification: Check if the BCM requires a software update. OEM bulletins occasionally note that BCM software updates resolve false over-temperature or over-current flags on HVAC actuators.
Defrost switch test: Use the cab's Economy/Defrost switch to cycle the system manually and monitor the ATC diagnostics to see if the fault is intermittent or permanent.
Repair steps
Power down machine
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shorts to the BCM.
Access the HVAC unit
Remove the necessary cab interior trim panels (typically the overhead console or right-hand console, depending on the tractor model) to access the ATC controller and blower driver assembly.
Locate the actuator
Locate the specific mode door motor assigned to the defrost vent (often mounted on the side of the main HVAC distribution duct).
Remove the actuator
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the actuator. Remove the mounting screws securing the actuator to the HVAC housing.
Verify door movement
With the actuator removed, manually move the defrost door linkage by hand to ensure it swings freely.
Install new actuator
Align the splines/linkage of the new actuator with the mode door shaft. Secure it with the mounting screws.
Reassemble and calibrate
Reconnect the wiring harness, restore battery power, and clear the BCM fault codes. Cycle the ATC system through the defrost modes to verify proper operation and ensure no new codes are generated.
