518865-12 - BCM

Case IH 518865-12 - BCM – BCM: ATC defrost vent door actuator - permanent electrical defect

Issue description

The controller has detected a permanent electrical failure (such as a hard short circuit, open circuit, or internal motor failure) in the actuator responsible for opening and closing the defrost vent door within the Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) HVAC system.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 380 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect
  • Steiger AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the BCM/ATC controller and the defrost vent door actuator for rubbed wires, pinched harnesses, or corroded pins

  2. Manually check the defrost vent door/louver linkage inside the HVAC plenum for mechanical binding caused by debris or warped plastic

  3. Use a diagnostic tool (like Case IH EST or Jaltest AGV) to perform an active component test on the HVAC actuators to verify if the defrost actuator responds

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent short circuits while working on the BCM harness.

  2. Access the HVAC Plenum

Remove the necessary cab interior trim panels (usually the roof liner or the rear cab trim, depending on where the main HVAC unit is housed on your specific model) to access the HVAC distribution box.

  3. Locate the Actuator

Identify the specific actuator controlling the defrost mode door (there are multiple identical actuators for floor, face, and defrost vents).

  4. Remove the Actuator

Unplug the electrical pigtail from the actuator. Remove the mounting screws securing the actuator to the HVAC housing. Pull the actuator straight off the blend door pivot shaft.

  5. Verify Door Movement

Gently turn the defrost door pivot shaft by hand to ensure it moves freely without binding.

  6. Install the New Actuator

Align the splines/shaft of the new actuator with the door pivot and secure it with the mounting screws. Do not force it; it should seat flush.

  7. Reassembly & Calibration

Reconnect the electrical plug, restore battery power, and use your diagnostic tool to clear the BCM fault codes. Run an HVAC actuator calibration procedure so the BCM can learn the end-stops of the new actuator. Reinstall the cab trim.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • HVAC Mode Door Actuator / Defrost Vent Door Actuator / ATC Stepper Motor

    91850325

Commonly used in Magnum series plenums. Verify exact part number against your tractor's PIN. Ensure you are ordering the 'Mode/Defrost' actuator.

  • Heater/HVAC Actuator

    87541625

Verify exact part number against your tractor's PIN. Ensure you are ordering the 'Mode/Defrost' actuator.

  • Heater Control Valve Actuator

    47644646

Do not order this part for this fault; it is a Temperature/Blend or Heater Control Valve Actuator that looks similar but serves a different function.
