Case IH 518866-12 - BCM – BCM: Permanent electrical defect within the Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) floor vent door actuator circuit

The control module has detected a hard electrical fault—such as an internal short circuit, an open circuit within the actuator motor, or a complete failure of the actuator's internal position feedback potentiometer—preventing the system from directing airflow to the floor vents.

   Perform a visual and mechanical inspection of the HVAC plenum to verify the floor vent door linkage is not physically jammed by debris or broken plastic.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the BCM/ATC controller and the floor vent door actuator for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corroded connector pins.

   Use a multimeter to verify proper voltage supply and ground at the actuator connector, and check the signal wire for a short-to-ground or short-to-power.

   Run an HVAC self-test or actuator calibration via the equipment's diagnostic monitor to see if the BCM can establish communication with or move the actuator.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes to the BCM during repair.

   Access the HVAC Box

   Remove the necessary cab interior trim panels, floor mats, or seat assembly to access the HVAC plenum assembly.

   Locate the Actuator

   Identify the specific mode door actuator responsible for the floor vents (do not confuse this with the temperature blend door or recirculation actuators).

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the actuator. Remove the mounting screws securing the actuator to the HVAC housing.

   Inspect Linkage

   Gently move the floor vent door by hand to ensure it swings freely without binding.

   Installation

   Align the splines or D-shaft of the new actuator with the vent door linkage. Do not force it; rotate the door manually until it seats into the actuator.

   Reassembly

   Secure the actuator with the mounting screws and plug in the electrical connector. Reinstall all cab trim and panels.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and allow the ATC system to run its automated self-calibration (or initiate the HVAC calibration via the cab monitor) so the BCM can learn the new actuator's end-stops.
