518888-06 - BCM

Case IH 518888-06 - BCM – BCM: Ambient color illumination driver - short circuit to ground

Issue description

The circuit responsible for powering the cab's ambient color lighting has shorted to ground. This means the voltage intended for the lighting driver is finding a premature path to the chassis ground, which will typically disable the ambient lighting to protect the circuit and may blow an associated fuse.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • Magnum Rowtrac
  • Steiger
  • Optum

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the cab roof wiring harness and the ambient lighting fixtures for obvious signs of pinched wires, chafing against the cab frame, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the ambient lighting modules from the harness and clear the code or cycle the key. If the code changes to an open circuit (05), the short is internal to the lighting module itself.

  3. If the code remains a short to ground with the lights unplugged, use a multimeter to test the ambient lighting driver wire between the BCM connector and the lighting connector for continuity to the chassis ground.

  4. Inspect the BCM connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the driver circuit to a ground pin.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the master battery disconnect switch to ensure the BCM is powered down before servicing.

  2. Access the Circuit

Remove the necessary cab interior trim or headliner panels to access the ambient lighting modules and the cab roof wiring harness.

  3. Repair the Short

If the harness is damaged: Repair the chafed wire using OEM-approved electrical splices and heat shrink, or replace the affected cab roof wiring harness section. If the light module is internally shorted: Unbolt and remove the faulty ambient lighting LED module and plug in the replacement unit.

  4. Reassembly

Secure the wiring harness, ensuring it is routed away from sharp metal edges to prevent future chafing. Reinstall the cab interior panels.

  5. Clear Codes

Turn the battery disconnect switch back on, power up the tractor, and use the electronic service tool to clear the BCM fault codes. Verify that the ambient lighting functions correctly.

Parts you might need
