518917-04 - UCM

Case IH 518917-04 - UCM – UCM: Front hitch exterior inching common/is-present - voltage low at key on

Issue description

The control module is detecting an abnormally low voltage condition on the circuit for the front hitch's exterior inching (raise/lower) switch during the initial key-on system check. This typically points to a short to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short within the switch itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the exterior front hitch inching switch (located on the front frame/hitch area) for physical damage, water intrusion, or corrosion.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the front hitch switch back to the UCM. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the tractor frame, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

  3. Check the UCM power supply fuses in the fuse block (e.g., UCM fuses F-002 7.5A, F-006 15A, or F-030 15A) to ensure a short hasn't blown a related circuit.

  4. Disconnect the switch, turn the key to the ON position, and measure the voltage at the harness connector. If the voltage is still low with the switch unplugged, the fault is in the wiring harness or the UCM. If the voltage returns to normal, the switch is internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the front hitch to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure, and turn the key OFF.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  3. Access the Switch

Locate the faulty exterior inching switch on the front hitch assembly.

  4. Remove the Switch

Unplug the electrical connector. If the diagnostic tests pointed to a faulty switch, unbolt or unclip the switch from its mounting bracket.

  5. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the harness was found to be shorted to ground, splice and repair the damaged section of the wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors.

  6. Install New Part

Mount the replacement inching switch and plug in the weather-tight connector.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and verify that fault code 518917-04 changes from 'Active' to 'Inactive' or clears entirely. Test the front hitch exterior controls for proper operation.
