Case IH 518949-02 - UCM – UCM: Incorrect steering valve controller configuration

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the Universal Control Module (UCM) has detected an invalid or incomplete configuration regarding the steering valve controller. This typically occurs when an auxiliary steering device (such as the AccuGuide or autoguidance system) is enabled, but the system parameters, steering valve calibrations, or ISOBus Class III settings are either missing, incorrectly configured, or have failed to initialize properly.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger (e.g., 500)
  • Magnum
  • Puma (e.g., 180-260 CVX)
  • Farmall
  • Mid Range Common Cab Combines
  • Flagship Combines (e.g., 250 Series Axial-Flow)

Check the cause

  1. Verify Display Configuration: Check the AFS Pro 700 or Pro 1200 display to ensure the machine is configured correctly for DGPS guidance (Navigate to Toolbox > Drives > Autoguidance Type = DGPS)

  2. Check Calibration Status: Verify whether the Wheel Angle Sensor and Steering Valve calibrations have been successfully performed. The UCM will flag a configuration error if these baseline calibrations are missing.

  3. Check for Related Faults: Look for accompanying faults in the UCM or Instrument Cluster (IC) related to the steering angle sensor (e.g., short circuits) or CAN bus communication errors, which could prevent the steering valve controller from configuring.

  4. Verify Activation Codes: If setting up a new system, ensure the correct ISOBus Class III Steering Control activation codes have been entered into the system.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Start the machine and turn on the AFS display. Ensure the hydraulic oil is warmed up to normal operating temperature.

  2. GPS & Nav Setup

Go to the TOOLBOX menu. Ensure the GPS receiver is communicating and the Navigation is set to AFS AccuGuide.

  3. Rear Wheel / Steering Sensor Calibration

Navigate to CALIBRATION > CALIBR. Select the Rear Wheel Position (or Steering Sensor) calibration. Drive the machine straight in a wide-open area and press OK to save the center position.

  4. Steering Valve Calibration

Remain in the CALIBRATION > CALIBR menu and select the Steering Valve Calibration. Follow the on-screen prompts. The machine will turn itself during this procedure to test the left and right valve commands and set the proportional gain (P-gain).

  5. Roll Offset Calibration

Navigate to CALIBRATION > NAV. Perform the Roll Calibration to compensate for minor variations in the navigation controller's placement and vehicle tilt.

  6. Dealer Intervention (If Calibration Fails)

If the fault code persists after calibration, the UCM may require a software re-flash or a manual configuration update using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ensure the auxiliary steering device parameters match the installed hardware.

Parts you might need

  • ECU; Transmission, Electronic Control Unit, UCM Controller

    87731866

This specific part number is for a Case IH Steiger 500; exact part numbers will vary by machine model and chassis serial number. A replacement UCM is not plug-and-play. It must be programmed by a certified Case IH dealer using the EST tool to inject the correct machine software, configuration files, and unlock codes.
