518977-10 - VCM

Case IH 518977-10 - VCM – VCM: Vehicle speed anti-tamper checksum sent by the cluster not constant

Issue description

The Vehicle Control Module detects that the security checksum being sent by the instrument cluster is fluctuating, missing, or mathematically incorrect compared to expected values.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other active CAN bus communication codes or instrument cluster faults

  2. Verify the firmware versions of both the VCM and the Instrument Cluster for mismatches

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the instrument cluster to the VCM for loose pins, corrosion, or moisture

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Plug the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) into the tractor's diagnostic port and pull all active and stored codes.

  2. Inspect Physical Connections

Access the rear of the instrument cluster and the VCM. Disconnect the harness connectors, inspect for pushed-back pins or corrosion, clean the contacts with electronic cleaner, and securely reconnect them.

  3. Flash/Update Software

If no physical wiring issues are found, use the EST to re-flash or update the software on both the Instrument Cluster and the VCM to the latest OEM releases.

  4. Component Replacement

If the wiring is intact and the software is fully updated but the 518977-10 code remains active, the instrument cluster is likely failing to generate the correct checksum internally. The cluster will need to be replaced.

  5. Verify Repair

Clear the fault codes using the EST, cycle the key, and test drive the tractor to ensure the vehicle speed registers correctly and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Instrument Cluster / Display Panel

Primary suspect if software updates fail

  • Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

    Secondary suspect

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Connector Pigtails

If physical damage is found during inspection
