518985-00 - BCM

Case IH 518985-00 - BCM – BCM: Work Lamp #7 Too Many Loads

Issue description

The system has detected an excessive current draw on the circuit powering Work Lamp #7. The "00" Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) specifically translates to "too many loads or faulty load" (documented in OEM literature as "muitas cargas ou carga com defeito"). This means the circuit is pulling more amperage than the module's internal driver is rated to handle. This is typically caused by an internally shorted light assembly, a wiring short to ground, or the unauthorized addition of aftermarket lights spliced into the factory circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 280 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 310 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Circuit Load Inspection: Verify that no aftermarket lights or accessories have been spliced into the Work Lamp #7 wiring. The BCM actively monitors current draw; adding extra lamps to a single circuit will immediately trigger a "too many loads" (FMI 00) fault.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect Work Lamp #7 for physical damage, water intrusion, or a melted housing/connector.

  3. Disconnect Test: Disconnect the Work Lamp #7 assembly. If the active fault changes from 518985-00 (Overcurrent) to 518985-05 (Open Circuit), the wiring is intact and the lamp itself is internally shorted.

  4. Harness Check: If the fault remains 518985-00 (or changes to 518985-06 - Short to Ground) with the lamp disconnected, the wiring harness between the BCM and the lamp has a short to ground or a melted wire.

Repair steps

  1. Power down tractor

Power down the tractor and turn off the master battery disconnect switch to protect the BCM.

  2. Remove aftermarket lights

If aftermarket lights were found: Remove the spliced connections. Wire any auxiliary lighting through a separate, dedicated relay directly to the battery rather than through the BCM's work lamp circuits.

  3. Repair wiring harness

If the harness is damaged: Locate the chafed or melted section of the wiring harness. Repair the wires using OEM-approved Deutsch connectors and heat-shrink tubing, ensuring no exposed copper can touch the tractor frame.

  4. Remove faulty lamp

If the lamp is faulty: Unbolt the internally shorted Work Lamp #7 assembly from its bracket and remove it.

  5. Install replacement lamp

Mount the replacement work lamp and plug in the Deutsch connector.

  6. Clear fault codes

Restore battery power, turn the ignition on, and clear the BCM fault codes via the AFS Pro display.

  7. Verify repair

Turn on the work lights to verify the lamp illuminates and the fault code does not return.
