518985-06 - BCM

Case IH 518985-06 - BCM – BCM: Work lamp #7 - short circuit to ground

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit supplying power to Work Lamp #7 has an unintended path to ground. This typically happens when a power wire chafes against the tractor's metal frame (mainframe), or if the lamp assembly/bulb fails internally and shorts out.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 280 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 310 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 380 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Power Down: Switch OFF the power supply (ignition key in the OFF position) before disconnecting any electrical connectors to prevent module damage.

  2. Visual Inspection: Check the wiring and connectors leading to Work Lamp #7 for visible damage, corrosion, loose connections, or pinched wires touching the frame.

  3. Continuity Test: Perform a continuity test to ground on the work lamp circuit with the engine off to confirm the short.

  4. Isolate the Component: Disconnect the connector at Work Lamp #7 and retest the harness for a short to ground. If the short disappears, the lamp assembly or bulb is internally shorted. If it remains, the wiring harness is compromised.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the ignition and ensure the machine's power supply is switched off.

  2. Locate Work Lamp #7 on the tractor cab/fender and disconnect its electrical connector.

  3. Inspect the connector for melted pins or water ingress.

  4. If the lamp is halogen: Turn and remove the bulb. Inspect it for a melted filament or internal short. Replace the bulb with a new one of the exact same wattage/power if it is faulty.

  5. If the lamp is a sealed LED or the housing is damaged: Replace the entire work lamp assembly.

  6. If the lamp tests fine: Trace the wiring harness from the lamp back to the BCM. Locate the section of the wire that is chafed and making contact with the bare metal chassis. Repair the wire using proper splicing techniques and heat shrink, then secure it away from sharp edges.

  7. Reconnect the lamp, turn on the ignition, and test the work lamp circuit to ensure the light functions and the BCM clears the fault code.
