Case IH 519043-04 - DEC – DEC: 12-volt sensor supply instance 1 - voltage below normal or shorted to ground

Issue description

A low-voltage or short-to-ground scenario on a 12V supply circuit managed by the DEC.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 180 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 200 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 220 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 240 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 250 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 280 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 310 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 380 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the tractor's batteries are fully charged and load-tested.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the DEC module to the 12V sensor supply (Instance 1) and the reverse battery relay. Look for chafed wires, pinched lines against the chassis, or melted insulation causing a short to ground.

  3. Locate the micro relay associated with the DEC/sensor supply circuit. Swap it with a known good relay of the same amperage to see if the fault clears.

  4. Disconnect the DEC module connectors and inspect the pins for pushed-out terminals, green corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  5. Back-probe the 12V sensor supply circuit with a multimeter while the key is ON to verify if the voltage is actually dropping below the normal threshold.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the master battery disconnect switch or the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the DEC Module & Relays

Locate the DEC module and the power distribution box containing the drivetrain/sensor relays.

  3. Replace Faulty Relay

If the diagnostic checks pointed to a failed relay (internal short or burnt contacts), pull the old 12V micro relay and install the replacement OEM relay.

  4. Repair Wiring

If a short to ground was found in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wire. Solder and heat-shrink a new section of wire, then re-loom the harness, ensuring it is routed away from sharp chassis edges or high-heat sources.

  5. Clean Grounds

Remove the main chassis ground for the DEC, clean it with a wire brush until bare metal is exposed, and reattach it securely.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position, access the AFS Pro display (or use the CNH EST diagnostic tool), and clear the inactive fault codes. Start the tractor and verify the code does not return.
