Case IH 519045-03 - BCM – BCM: ATC solar sensor 1 - out of range - high
Issue description
The Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) system uses a solar sensor to monitor sun load and automatically adjust the HVAC fan speed and temperature to maintain the operator's selected cab climate. An "out of range - high" condition means the voltage signal returning from the sensor is exceeding the normal operating threshold (typically indicating an open circuit, a disconnected sensor, or a short to power/B+ in the signal wire).
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum 200 AFS Connect
- Magnum 280 AFS Connect
- Magnum 310 AFS Connect
- Magnum 400 AFS Connect
Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate the solar sensor on the right fender and inspect the 3-pole electrical connector (X-898) for disconnected wires, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Wiring Harness Check: Trace the wiring harness from the solar sensor back to the BCM. Look for chafed wires, cuts, or pinched areas that could cause an open circuit or a short to a power source.
Voltage Test: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the connector for proper ground and reference voltage. If the wiring is intact and the voltage at the connector is correct, the sensor itself has likely failed internally.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the ATC solar sensor 1 (Right Fender Solar Sensor).
Depress the locking tab and disconnect the 3-pole female electrical connector (X-898) from the sensor.
If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or a faulty connector, splice in a new connector or terminal pins as needed.
If the sensor is faulty, remove the mounting hardware/clips securing the solar sensor to the fender and remove the unit.
Install the replacement solar sensor into the mounting hole and secure it.
Reconnect the 3-pole electrical connector until it clicks into place.
Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on.
Clear the inactive fault codes from the BCM using the AFS Pro monitor or a diagnostic tool.
Test the HVAC system by setting it to "AUTO" mode in direct sunlight to verify the fan speed and temperature adjust correctly.
