Case IH 519046-03 - BCM – BCM: ATC solar sensor 2 - out of range - high

Issue description

The voltage signal from the ATC solar sensor 2 is above normal or shorted to a high source. This typically means there is an open circuit (such as a broken ground wire causing the signal voltage to float high), a short to battery power, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a manual override test by switching the HVAC system from Auto to Manual mode. If the fan and temperature controls work perfectly in manual mode but act erratically in auto mode, the solar sensor or its circuit is the definitive cause.

  2. Locate the solar sensor (typically mounted on the right fender, cab roof, or dashboard near the windshield) and ensure it is not covered by dirt, debris, or aftermarket mounts.

  3. Disconnect the 3-pole electrical connector at the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

  4. Use a multimeter to check the sensor's wiring harness. Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage from the BCM and that the ground circuit is intact (an open ground is the most common cause of an out of range - high code).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes while working on the BCM circuits.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate Solar Sensor 2. On many Magnum AFS Connect models, this is designated as the 'Right Fender Solar Sensor'.

  3. Disconnect

    Depress the locking tab on the 3-pole female electrical connector and unplug it from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Remove the retaining clips or screws holding the solar sensor in its mounting cavity and pull the faulty sensor out.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Seat the replacement solar sensor into the mounting hole and secure it.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the 3-pole connector back into the sensor until it clicks. (If the connector was corroded during your diagnostic check, splice in a new pigtail connector before this step).

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON, and use the AFS Pro display or a CAN diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive 519046-03 fault code.

  8. Test

    Park the tractor in direct sunlight, set the HVAC to 'Auto,' and verify that the fan speed adjusts appropriately without throwing a new code.
