Case IH 519115-03 - VCM – VCM: C1 transmission control lever position signal voltage high

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the C1 transmission control lever (also known as the gear selector, shuttle lever, or FNRP pod) that exceeds the normal operating parameter. This condition is typically caused by a sensor that has shorted to a high voltage source, a failed internal potentiometer/switch, or a damaged wiring harness.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 200 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 220 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 380 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Rule out operator error: Determine if the operator inadvertently caused the fault by holding the transmission control lever (FNRP) out of any detent position for more than 2 seconds.

  2. Check the shuttle position display: Turn the key to the 'ON' position and watch the shuttle position display on the instrumentation cluster while shifting the lever. An illogical state (e.g., Forward icon lit when in Park/Neutral, or two positions shown at once) indicates a failed closed switch or wiring shorted to power.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness: Trace the wiring harness from the transmission control lever (FNRP pod) to the VCM. Look for rubbed, pinched, or exposed wires that could be shorting to a high-voltage source.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a hard, level surface, place the transmission in park, shut off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Disconnect the negative ground cable from the battery to prevent electrical damage.

  3. Remove the steering wheel to gain unobstructed access to the steering column.

  4. Take off the plastic steering column covers to expose the gear selector assembly.

  5. Disconnect the wiring harness connected to the gear selector switch.

  6. Unbolt and remove the faulty gear selector assembly from the column.

  7. Install the new gear selector switch/lever assembly and secure the mount.

  8. Reconnect the wiring harness securely.

  9. Reinstall the steering column covers and the steering wheel.

  10. Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and cycle the shuttle lever to verify the display reads correctly and the fault code is cleared.
