Case IH 519116-04 - VCM – VCM: C2 transmission control lever position signal voltage low

Issue description

The signal voltage from the C2 transmission control lever (integrated into the armrest's Multi-Function Handle) has dropped below the normal operating threshold. This indicates a short to ground in the signal circuit, an open circuit in the wiring harness, a loss of the 5V reference voltage, or an internal failure of the position sensor/potentiometer inside the control lever.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect series (Magnum 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect series

Check the cause

  1. Determine if the operator caused the fault by holding the transmission control lever (FNRP) out of any detent position for more than 2 seconds. If so, clear the code and train the operator on proper use.

  2. Check the transmission control lever function on the instrumentation controller gear display to see if the lever's physical position matches the commanded gear on the screen.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the Multi-Function Handle and the VCM. Look for chafed wires causing a short to ground or broken wires causing an open circuit.

  4. Disconnect the Multi-Function Handle and VCM connectors to check for bent, corroded, or pushed-back pins.

  5. Verify that the Multi-Function Handle is receiving the proper 5V reference voltage and has a solid ground.

Repair steps

  1. Power down tractor

Power down the tractor and turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  2. Remove trim panels

Remove the trim panels on the armrest to access the mounting hardware and wiring for the Multi-Function Handle (MFH).

  3. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the base of the handle.

  4. Remove faulty handle

Remove the retaining bolts securing the handle to the armrest console and remove the faulty handle.

  5. Install new handle

Install the new Multi-Function Handle and secure the mounting bolts.

  6. Reconnect harness and reinstall panels

Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall the armrest trim panels.

  7. Power on and navigate to calibration

Power the tractor on and navigate to the tractor's calibration menu on the Pro700/AFS display.

  8. Perform Transmission/Lever Calibration

Perform a Transmission/Lever Calibration so the VCM can learn the new sensor voltage limits. Follow the on-screen prompts, which will require you to move the transmission control lever into specific gears (e.g., Forward, Neutral, 3rd/4th gear) while manipulating engine RPMs as instructed by the display.
