Case IH 519117-04 - VCM – VCM: C3 transmission control lever position signal voltage low

Issue description

The system is detecting that the electrical signal voltage coming from the C3 transmission control lever position sensor (potentiometer) is below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically indicates a short to ground in the signal circuit, a disconnected plug, a failed sensor, or a wiring harness failure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the transmission control lever assembly (on the armrest console) and the VCM for pinched wires, chafing, or loose/corroded connector pins.

  2. Disconnect the C3 lever position sensor, turn the key ON, and use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) from the VCM and has a solid ground connection.

  3. Check the signal wire between the sensor connector and the VCM for continuity and test for a short to ground.

  4. If wiring is intact, perform a sensor sweep test by monitoring the signal voltage while moving the lever; the voltage should sweep smoothly without dropping out. If voltage stays low, the sensor/lever assembly has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Component

    Remove the necessary trim panels on the operator armrest/side console to access the transmission control lever assembly and its wiring harness.

  3. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or broken wire in the harness, repair the damaged section using OEM-approved wiring repair techniques (solder/heat shrink or replacing the pinned connector).

  4. Replace the Lever/Sensor

    If the sensor itself is faulty, disconnect the electrical connector and unbolt the transmission control lever assembly. Install the new assembly and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassemble and Power Up

    Reconnect the electrical harness, reinstall the armrest trim panels, and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

    Turn the key ON. Because a transmission control component was replaced, you must perform a transmission/clutch calibration via the AFS Pro display. Navigate to the transmission calibration menu and follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the C3 clutch/lever position.

  7. Clear Codes

    Clear the 519117-04 fault code from the VCM memory and test drive the tractor to ensure proper shifting and that the code does not return.
