Case IH 519118-04 - VCM – VCM / UCM: R1 transmission control lever position signal voltage low

The control module is detecting a voltage on the R1 transmission control lever (located on the Multi-Function Handle/Armrest) that is below the acceptable minimum threshold. This typically indicates a short to ground, an open circuit in the signal wire, or a failed potentiometer/sensor inside the Multi-Function Handle.

   Use the AFS Pro 1200 display's diagnostic menu (or an electronic service tool) to view the live voltage reading for the R1 transmission control lever. A reading of 0V or near 0V confirms a hard short to ground or an open circuit.

   Remove the armrest trim panels and inspect the wiring harness connecting the Multi-Function Handle to the UCM/VCM. Look for pinched wires, chafing, or disconnected plugs.

   Disconnect the main connector at the base of the Multi-Function Handle. Inspect for bent pins, pushed-out terminals, or corrosion.

   Check for the 5V reference signal and a good ground at the handle's connector using a multimeter.

   Test the signal wire between the Multi-Function Handle and the UCM for continuity.

   Test the signal wire for a short to ground.

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly (good 5V, good ground, no shorts, good continuity), the fault is internal to the R1 position sensor inside the Multi-Function Handle.

   Power Down

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the retaining screws securing the top cover of the armrest console to expose the base of the Multi-Function Handle and the UCM.

   Carefully unplug the electrical connectors routing from the Multi-Function Handle to the armrest control board.

   If the diagnostic checks pointed to a failed sensor, remove the mounting hardware securing the Multi-Function Handle. (Note: On modern AFS Connect machines, individual potentiometers inside the joystick are rarely serviceable; the entire Multi-Function Handle is typically replaced as a single sealed unit).

   Reassembly

   Install the new Multi-Function Handle, torque the mounting screws, and reconnect the wiring harnesses. Ensure the harness is routed correctly so it does not pinch when the armrest is adjusted.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. You will likely need to navigate to the TRANS SET MENU or CALIBRATION menu on the AFS Pro 1200 display to calibrate the new handle's minimum and maximum lever positions.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the stored 519118-04 fault code and test drive the tractor to verify the transmission responds correctly to the R1 lever inputs.
