Case IH 519572-02 - UCM – UCM: Steering valve controller calibration fault

Issue description

Indicates that the steering valve controller lacks a valid calibration, has failed its calibration checksum, or has an incorrect configuration in the EEPROM data.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Optum AFS Connect
  • Steiger AFS Connect
  • Puma / Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the machine's hydraulic oil is fully warmed up to operating temperature. Cold oil will cause the steering valve calibration to fail.

  2. Look for active faults related to the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS), steering valve coil currents, or LVDT sensor connection.

  3. Verify that the UCM and the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) software versions are compatible.

  4. Check the ISOBUS diagnostic page on the AFS Pro 1200 display to ensure the external guidance system and steering controller are communicating properly.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Tractor

Move the tractor to a wide-open area. Lift the front axle so the wheels are off the ground to prevent binding during the automated sweep.

  2. Access the Calibration Menu

Turn on the tractor and the AFS Pro 1200 display. Navigate to CALIBRATION > CALIBR (or the ISObus diagnostic/steering settings page).

  3. Run Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration

Before calibrating the valve, ensure the Wheel Angle Sensor calibration has been successfully completed and saved.

  4. Run Steering Valve Calibration

Select the Steering Valve Calibration wizard. Engage the autoguidance system if prompted. The system will emit an audible beep and automatically sweep the steering to learn the valve's deadbands and flow rates.

  5. Verify Completion

The status indicator should turn green. If the calibration fails repeatedly (e.g., "out of range after 4th attempt"), inspect the steering hydraulic valve assembly for mechanical binding or a failed LVDT sensor.

  6. Module/Valve Replacement

If the calibration checksum continues to fail and wiring is intact, the steering valve or the UCM itself must be replaced and reprogrammed using the Electronic Service Tool (EST).

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Universal Control Module (UCM)

    47632823

Software part numbers vary by machine. The module must be flashed with the correct software via EST after installation.

  • Steering Valve Controller (SVC) / Steering Hydraulic Valve

Varies heavily by exact axle/model. If the valve is replaced, the calibration procedure MUST be performed before the tractor will steer autonomously.

  • Wheel Angle Sensor

Often the root cause of calibration failures if the sensor has a dead spot.
