Case IH 519572-14 - UCM – UCM: Steering valve controller calibration fault

Issue description

The steering valve controller has either lost its calibration data, the calibration was not completed successfully, or the stored calibration values are out of the acceptable range for safe electro-hydraulic steering operation.

Check the cause

  1. Check for active CAN communication faults, steering angle sensor (WAS) faults, or steering valve controller voltage faults (e.g., battery voltage too high/low), which can prevent successful calibration.

  2. Verify that the UCM, Steering Valve Controller (SVC), and Steering Redundant Controller (SRC) are running the latest software (e.g., SVC software version 2.02).

  3. Inspect the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) on the left-hand steering articulation and the steering wheel sensor to ensure they are physically intact and functioning.

  4. Ensure the hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and at normal operating temperature, as cold oil can cause calibration procedures to fail or time out.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic connector (CAN 1 / CAN 2).

  2. Verify Configuration

    Navigate to the Configuration menu > General Configuration. Ensure the steering valve size is correctly defined in the UCM (e.g., 500 cc is the standard configuration for Magnum AFS Connect models).

  3. Calibrate Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS)

    If the WAS was recently removed, replaced, or is out of sync, perform the WAS calibration first through the UCM menu.

  4. Perform Steering Valve Calibration

    Navigate to the Calibration menu (Diagnostics > Calibration > UCM/Steering). Initiate the Steering Valve Controller calibration.

  5. Follow Prompts

    Follow the on-screen EST or AFS Pro 1200 display prompts, which typically require turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock to allow the system to learn the valve deadbands, flow characteristics, and LVDT frequencies.

  6. Clear Faults

    Once calibration is successfully completed, cycle the key and clear the inactive 519572-14 fault code from the UCM. If the calibration fails repeatedly, the Steering Valve Controller or the steering valve itself is likely defective and must be replaced.
