5201

Case IH 5201 – UCM: Left Joystick Right-Left Axis Pin A Open Or Shorted To Ground Or Power

Issue description

The control module is detecting an abnormal or out-of-range voltage signal on the 'Pin A' circuit for the left joystick's right-to-left axis sensor. This indicates that the circuit is either completely broken (open circuit), shorted directly to the machine's chassis ground, or shorted to a power source.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Left Joystick and the UCM for pinched wires, rubbed-through insulation, corrosion, or loose/backed-out pins.

  2. Perform a circuit continuity test on the signal wire (Pin A) from the joystick connector to the UCM connector.

  3. Test the Pin A wire for a short-to-ground (continuity to chassis ground) and short-to-power (stray voltage with key ON).

  4. Verify the joystick is receiving the proper 5V reference and ground supply from the UCM.

  5. If wiring and reference voltages are correct, isolate the fault to the left joystick's internal right-left axis potentiometer/Hall-effect sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Connections

Remove the necessary trim panels or armrest covers to access the base of the left joystick and the UCM.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken or shorted wire, repair the damaged section of the harness using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the Joystick

If the wiring is intact, the joystick assembly itself has failed. Disconnect the electrical connector at the base of the left joystick. Unbolt the joystick assembly from the armrest/console mount and remove it. Install the new joystick assembly and secure the mounting hardware.

  5. Reconnect and Calibrate

Reconnect the joystick electrical connector and the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or use the machine's onboard diagnostic display to clear the 5201 fault code. You may need to perform a 'Left joystick calibration' procedure via the EST so the UCM can learn the new sensor's center, minimum, and maximum values. Test the machine to ensure full right-left functionality is restored.
