Case IH 520192-25 - VCM – VCM / UCM: Wheel angle sensor disagreement / Primary wheel angle sensor, voltage low

Issue description

The steering controller is receiving an abnormal, mismatched, or low voltage signal from the primary wheel angle sensor (WAS) compared to the expected steering position or the secondary sensor, which typically disables auto-guidance/auto-steer features.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wheel angle sensor wiring harness and the 3-pin connector for damage, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  2. Use a multimeter or the tractor's diagnostic screen (e.g., Pro 700 or Pro 1200 display) to check the sensor voltage. The primary sensor should have a steady voltage (often reading between 2.0V and 2.9V depending on wheel position) that changes smoothly without dropping out as the wheels turn.

  3. Verify the 5V reference and ground circuits from the VCM/UCM to the sensor.

  4. Check the ISOBus diagnostic page on the display to ensure the steering mode is set to 'off-road mode' and that no other steering valve faults are active.

  5. Attempt a Wheel Angle Sensor and Steering Valve calibration through the display monitor to see if the sensor can be successfully re-homed. If calibration fails, the sensor or harness is likely defective.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

    Ensure the machine is safely parked before beginning repairs.

  2. Locate the wheel angle sensor.

    On most Case IH tractors, it is mounted directly on the front axle steering cylinder or integrated into the tie rod assembly.

  3. Disconnect the 3-pin wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the mounting hardware securing the sensor body.

    Typically retaining rings, bolts, or a linkage arm. Note: On some flagship combines and specific tractor axles, the sensor is built into the steering cylinder, requiring partial cylinder disassembly or a complete cylinder replacement if an external bypass isn't fabricated.

  5. Remove the old sensor and discard the old O-rings (if applicable).

  6. Install the new wheel angle sensor with new O-rings and secure it with the mounting hardware.

  7. Reconnect the 3-pin wiring harness.

  8. Turn on the tractor and navigate to the display monitor (Pro 700 / Pro 1200) to perform a Wheel Angle Sensor calibration.

    You must perform a Wheel Angle Sensor calibration so the VCM/UCM can learn the new sensor's voltage limits at full left, full right, and center positions.
