520198-03 - VCM

Case IH 520198-03 - VCM – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) / UCM (Universal Control Module) / Air Cart Rate ECU: Internal 2.5V Ref, Voltage above normal, or shorted to high source / Cut-off solenoid supply voltage high

Issue description

The control module is detecting a voltage on the cut-off solenoid circuit (or its internal 2.5V reference circuit) that exceeds the normal operating threshold, usually caused by a short circuit to a higher voltage source (like a 12V power wire).

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH MX / TG Series
  • Case IH Precision Air Carts

Check the cause

  1. Stop the engine, remove the key, and relieve any hydraulic pressure before disconnecting fluid lines or electrical connections

  2. Inspect the electrical system, specifically the wiring harness leading from the VCM/UCM to the cut-off solenoid, for loose connections, frayed insulation, or pinched wires

  3. Using a multimeter, check the 2.5V reference circuit and the cut-off solenoid supply circuit for a short to a high voltage source (e.g., a short to a 12V battery wire)

  4. Disconnect the cut-off solenoid to see if the voltage on the harness side returns to normal. If it does, the solenoid is internally shorted. If the voltage remains high, the short is in the wiring harness or the VCM itself

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the batteries from the system. Always disconnect the chassis bonding cable from the battery's negative terminal first to prevent sparks and isolate the system.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed frayed insulation or a short to a 12V source in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected harness segment.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring harness tests good but the solenoid is internally shorted, remove the retaining hardware for the cut-off solenoid, disconnect the electrical connector, and install a new OEM cut-off solenoid.

  4. Replace the VCM/UCM

If both the wiring harness and the solenoid test perfectly fine, the internal 2.5V reference inside the VCM/UCM has failed. The module must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect all electrical connections, reconnect the battery (positive first, then negative), and ensure all access doors and safety shields are reinstalled.

  6. Clear Codes

Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 520198-03 fault code. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
