Case IH 520198-05 - VCM – VCM: Cut-off solenoid experiencing low current

The system has detected that the electrical current flowing to the steering cut-off solenoid is below the minimum expected threshold. This typically indicates an open circuit, a disconnected plug, a broken wire, or a failed (open) solenoid coil.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the cut-off solenoid on the steering valve block for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires.

   Disconnect the plug at the cut-off solenoid and check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the connector.

   Measure the resistance across the two pins of the cut-off solenoid coil using a multimeter. 'OL' or extremely high resistance indicates a broken internal coil.

   Disconnect the harness at the VCM and at the solenoid to perform a continuity test on both power and ground wires, and check for a short to ground.

   Safety First

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, relieve all hydraulic pressure by turning the steering wheel back and forth, and turn off the battery disconnect switch.

   Locate the Valve

   Access the steering valve block assembly. Clean the area around the cut-off solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug the electrical connector from the cut-off solenoid.

   Remove the Coil

   Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the valve cartridge.

   Install New Part

   Slide the new solenoid coil onto the cartridge stem. Install and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, or you may distort the cartridge).

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in. Ensure the locking tab clicks into place.

   Test

   Turn on the battery disconnect, start the tractor, and clear the fault codes using the AFS Pro display or the EST (Electronic Service Tool). Engage the AccuGuide system in a safe, open area to verify the steering cut-off solenoid operates correctly and the code does not return.
