Case IH 520199-19 - VCM – VCM: Communication error of the steering valve controller with the steering wheel sensor

The control module is no longer receiving a valid signal or has lost CAN bus communication with the steering wheel angle sensor. This typically disables auto-guidance (AccuGuide) features and may cause the steering system to default to manual operation.

   Verify the CAN configuration in the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) to ensure the steering wheel sensor is properly recognized on the network.

   Inspect power supply for a battery defect, alternator defect, or low voltage during cold starts, as voltage drops can trigger false communication loss codes.

   Check the presence and correct connection of the steering wheel sensor to the network.

   Inspect the wiring harness for high resistance, chafing, or moisture intrusion.

   Verify the correct functioning of the CAN controller by testing CAN High and CAN Low lines for proper voltage and terminating resistance (typically 60 ohms).

   Visual Inspection

   Locate the steering wheel sensor (typically located on the steering column or steering cylinder/axle depending on the exact machine configuration). Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, bent terminals, or water ingress.

   Harness Testing

   Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the wiring harness between the steering wheel sensor connector and the VCM/UCM. Repair any broken wires or shorts to ground/power.

   Sensor Replacement

   If the wiring and CAN bus network are intact but the VCM still cannot communicate with the sensor, the steering wheel sensor has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

   Reassembly and Calibration

   Install the new sensor. Turn the key on and clear the inactive fault codes. You must then perform a steering angle sensor calibration / AccuGuide calibration via the Pro 700/1200 display to center the new sensor.

   Test Drive

   Engage the auto-guidance system in the field to verify the steering valve controller is communicating properly and the tractor tracks the line without throwing the 520199-19 code.
