Case IH 520199-22 - VCM – VCM: Message Missing or Boot-up Timeout

Indicates a 'Message Missing' or 'Boot-up Timeout' error between the steering valve controller and the steering wheel sensor, resulting in a complete loss of CAN communication from the steering wheel position sensor to the electrohydraulic steering valve.

   Verify that the SASA sensor is receiving power. A lack of voltage will prevent it from booting up and sending CAN messages.

   Check the CAN bus harness between the SASA sensor (located on the steering column) and the PVED-CLS controller (located on the steering valve). Look for open circuits, shorts to ground, or disconnected pins.

   Inspect the AMP connector (type 2-967059-1) at the SASA sensor for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

   Ensure the SASA source address parameters in the controller have not been corrupted, which can cause a message timeout.

   Locate the Sensor

   Access the steering column inside the cab. The SASA sensor is mounted directly between the steering column and the steering unit (OSP).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the 500mm pigtail cable with the AMP connector from the main cab harness.

   Remove the Sensor

   Remove the four mounting bolts securing the sensor to the steering unit.

   Install the New Sensor

   Place the new SASA sensor into position, ensuring the flexible internal teeth properly interact and align with the splines on the steering column.

   Torque

   Install and tighten the four mounting bolts to a maximum torque of 30 N·m (265.5 lbf·in).

   Reconnect and Calibrate

   Reconnect the AMP electrical connector. Turn on the machine and use the Case IH diagnostic tool to perform a wheel angle calibration and steering valve spool calibration to initialize the new sensor.
