520201-02 - VCM

Case IH 520201-02 - VCM – VCM: Communication loss or fault between the steering valve controller and the vehicle controller

Issue description

The main vehicle control module is no longer receiving the expected CAN bus messages or handshake signals from the Steering Valve Controller (SVC), which is critical for electronic/auto-guidance steering functions.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect 180
  • Magnum AFS Connect 200
  • Magnum AFS Connect 220
  • Magnum AFS Connect 240
  • Magnum AFS Connect 250
  • Magnum AFS Connect 280
  • Magnum AFS Connect 310
  • Magnum AFS Connect 340
  • Magnum AFS Connect 380
  • Magnum AFS Connect 400

Check the cause

  1. Check the CAN bus communication lines (CAN High / CAN Low) between the VCM/UCM and the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) for continuity.

  2. Verify that the Steering Valve Controller is receiving proper operating voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  3. Look for concurrent related steering or speed sensor fault codes (such as 520200-22, 520200-19, or 520199-22).

  4. Verify the software version on the Steering Valve Controller (should be running version 2.02).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Harness Inspection

Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the VCM to the Steering Valve Controller. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or heat damage.

  3. Connector Check

Disconnect the harness at the Steering Valve Controller. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pin push-out. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Continuity Testing

Using a multimeter, test the CAN lines between the VCM and the SVC. Resistance across the CAN bus should measure approximately 60 ohms if the terminating resistors are intact.

  5. Software Flash

If the wiring is intact and power/ground are verified, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Flash/update the VCM and the Steering Valve Controller to the latest software (e.g., SVC version 2.02).

  6. Component Replacement

If the controller fails to communicate with the EST or the fault returns immediately after a software flash, replace the Steering Valve Controller unit.

  7. Calibration

After replacing the controller or flashing the software, perform a full steering system and valve calibration via the AFS Pro display or EST tool to ensure the new module is recognized by the VCM.
