520201-09 - VCM

Case IH 520201-09 - VCM – VCM: Loss of communication between the steering valve controller and the vehicle controller

Issue description

The main vehicle controller is no longer receiving expected CAN bus messages or synchronization data from the steering valve's internal module.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, and 380)
  • Case IH Optum AFS Connect
  • Case IH Vestrum CVX / ActiveDrive8 Series (Models 100, 110, 120, 130)

Check the cause

  1. Locate the electronic steering valve and controller under the right-hand service door, beneath the DEF Tank

  2. Inspect the steering angle sensor located in the articulation hinge for wear, incorrect assembly, or poor calibration

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the VCM and the steering valve controller for physical damage

  4. Test the CAN communication lines for proper voltage and continuity

  5. Verify the current software versions on the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and the Steering Redundant Controller (SRC)

Repair steps

  1. Harness Inspection

Access the electronic steering valve under the right-hand service door (below the DEF tank). Disconnect the harness and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or spread terminals.

  2. Circuit Testing

Verify that the steering valve controller is receiving proper power and ground. Test the CAN High and CAN Low circuits back to the VCM to rule out a broken wire or short circuit.

  3. Software Update (Flash)

If the wiring is intact, update the controller software. Flash the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and Steering Redundant Controller (SRC) to software version 2.02 to resolve internal logic and communication errors.

  4. Sensor Calibration

Recalibrate the steering angle sensor to ensure the steering valve controller is receiving accurate position feedback.

  5. Component Replacement

If the software update fails or the controller has suffered an internal hardware failure (such as a coil supply switch state synchronization failure), the electronic steering valve / controller assembly must be replaced.
