520201-22 - VCM

Case IH 520201-22 - VCM – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loss of communication between the steering valve controller and the vehicle controller.

Issue description

The vehicle's main controller (UCM) stops receiving the expected data packets or "heartbeat" signals from the steering valve controller on the CAN bus within a calibrated time window. This is typically a physical layer issue (wiring/CAN bus) or a power loss to the steering module.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect Series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Steiger AFS Connect Series
  • Quadtrac AFS Connect Series
  • Optum AFS Connect Series

Check the cause

  1. System Voltage Check: Verify battery voltage is within specification (above 12V engine off, ~14V running). Low voltage can cause modules to drop off the network.

  2. CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the key off and battery disconnected, measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the steering valve controller connector. It should read approximately 60 ohms (two 120-ohm terminating resistors in parallel). If it reads 120 ohms, there is an open circuit or missing resistor. If it reads near 0 ohms, the CAN lines are shorted together.

  3. Power and Ground Verification: Check the power feed (B+) and ground pins at the steering valve controller harness. A lost ground (often due to weld spatter or loose eyelets on the chassis) is a leading cause of this code.

  4. Connector Inspection: Disconnect the harnesses at both the steering valve controller and the UCM. Inspect for pushed-out pins, bent terminals, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  5. Network Topology Check: Use a diagnostic scan tool to see if other modules are also offline. If multiple modules are offline, the issue is a main CAN bus failure, not the steering valve controller itself.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Power

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Modules

Locate the steering valve controller (typically mounted near the steering orbital valve/front axle block) and the UCM (usually located in the cab electronics compartment or under the right-hand console).

  3. Clean and Reseat Connectors

Disconnect the harness from the steering valve controller. Spray the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner. Ensure the weather seals are intact. Reconnect firmly, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the CAN bus resistance test failed, trace the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the steering valve back to the UCM. Look for pinch points near the cab pivot or front axle suspension components. Splice and heat-shrink any broken or chafed wires.

  5. Software Update

If the wiring is 100% intact, the UCM or steering valve controller may be experiencing a software lockup. A dealer must flash the UCM to the latest software version (e.g., UCM software version 15.2.0.0 or newer, depending on the exact PIN/serial number).

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Use the AFS Pro 1200 display or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes. Perform a steering valve calibration if the module was replaced.

Parts you might need

Part numbers frequently supersede based on software revisions; verify with your dealer using your tractor's specific PIN.

  • Steering Valve Controller / Flow Switch

    47626971

Newer style. Often shared across Patriot sprayers and AFS Connect tractors; verify pinout as some newer switches require swapping Pins A and B during installation.
