520202-09 - VCM

Case IH 520202-09 - VCM – VCM: Steering Valve Controller (SVC) Lost Communication with Auxiliary Steering Device

Issue description

The main vehicle controller is unable to verify the status of, or send commands to, the auxiliary steering system, which is a critical safety and autoguidance feature.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Patriot Sprayers

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the main cab harness, front dash harness, and the specific steering valve/VCM sub-harnesses for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Test the CAN bus communication lines between the VCM, the Steering Valve Controller, and the auxiliary steering device for continuity and proper voltage.

  3. Verify the software versions on the VCM and Steering Valve Controller. SVC and SRC should be running compatible software (e.g., version 2.02) and the Advanced Steering Configuration controller dataset must be up to date.

  4. Check the CAN bus terminating resistors on the steering network to ensure the communication loop is closed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Disconnect the machine's battery power before servicing the CAN bus network or steering controllers to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Controllers

Locate the VCM and the Steering Valve Controller assembly (typically mounted near the steering valve block or under the cab floor, depending on the model).

  3. Clean and Re-seat Connections

Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at the steering valve controller and the auxiliary steering device. Inspect for moisture or bent pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely re-seat the connectors.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed an open or shorted wire in the CAN bus lines, repair or replace the affected harness section (e.g., Autoguidance Valve to Steering Valve harness).

  5. Replace Faulty Components

If the wiring is intact and communication cannot be restored, the Steering Valve Controller or the Auxiliary Steering Valve assembly itself has failed internally and must be replaced.

  6. Software Flash & Calibration

After replacing the controller or valve, reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the latest software to the new controller.

  7. System Reset

Perform a factory reset/recalibration of the steering system via the AFS Pro/display to ensure the VCM recognizes the new auxiliary steering device parameters. Clear the 520202-09 fault code.
