Case IH 520202-22 - VCM – VCM: Auxiliary steering device never received (boot-up timeout)
Issue description
Loss of communication over the CAN bus. The steering valve controller is not receiving the expected CAN messages from the auxiliary steering device (such as the AFS auto-guidance module) during the system's boot-up sequence.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Steiger Series (e.g., 370, 470, 715 Quadtrac)
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Optum Series
- Case IH Puma Series
Check the cause
Verify the auxiliary steering device is receiving adequate power (minimum 9V required; 12V/24V nominal) and check for blown fuses in the chassis supply or EHS central box.
Inspect the CAN Bus wiring between the auxiliary steering device and the PVED-CLS controller for disconnected plugs, broken wires, or corroded pins.
Check if the parameter setting of the auxiliary source address is incorrect, which can cause the PGN message to be lost or time out.
Repair steps
Power down system
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Inspect wiring and connectors
Locate the PVED-CLS steering valve controller and the auxiliary steering module. Disconnect the CAN bus harness connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.
Test CAN bus continuity
Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the CAN_H and CAN_L lines between the auxiliary steering device and the VCM/PVED-CLS controller. Repair or replace any damaged sections of the wiring harness.
Restore power and test
Reconnect the connectors and the battery. Turn the ignition on to initiate the boot-up sequence.
Verify software parameters
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Verify that the AUX source address parameters are correctly configured in the VCM.
Clear codes and test drive
Clear the 520202-22 fault code and perform a steering check valve test and a short test drive to ensure the auto-guidance system communicates properly and the code does not return.
Replace control module
If the wiring is perfectly intact, power is verified, and the code immediately returns on boot-up, the PVED-CLS controller or the auxiliary steering module has an internal failure and must be replaced.
