520203-03 - PCM

Case IH 520203-03 - PCM – PCM: PCM: Internal backup battery voltage above normal, or shorted to high source

Issue description

The internal backup battery within the PCM is registering a voltage that is higher than the normal operating range, or the battery's monitoring circuit is shorted to a high voltage source (B+).

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect series
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect series
  • Case IH Patriot sprayers

Check the cause

  1. Check the tractor's main battery voltage and alternator output for voltage spikes caused by a failing voltage regulator

  2. Inspect the main wiring harness connecting to the PCM for chafing or shorts to a high voltage source (B+) backfeeding into the module

  3. Observe the front LED indicators on the PCM for abnormal flashing patterns indicating internal hardware failure

  4. Evaluate the age of the PCM internal backup battery (service life is five years); older batteries may have internally failed or shorted

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine ignition and engage the main battery disconnect switch to prevent power surges.

  2. Locate the PCM

Locate the PCM on the vehicle. OEM installation guidelines dictate that the mounting location must allow access to the internal battery compartment (often labeled "DD" in service diagrams) and the front LED indicators.

  3. Access the Battery Compartment

Open the internal battery compartment on the PCM.

  4. Inspect for Damage

Check the battery and the internal circuit board for signs of battery acid leakage, moisture intrusion, or burnt pins which would indicate a direct short to a high source.

  5. Replace the Battery

If the compartment is clean but the battery is faulty (or over 5 years old), remove the old internal backup battery and install a new one.

  6. Reassemble and Test

Close the battery compartment, turn on the main battery disconnect, and cycle the key. Check the AFS Pro 1200 / Pro 700 display to see if the 520203-03 code moves from "Active" to "Inactive".

  7. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

If replacing the internal battery does not clear the code, the PCM's internal voltage monitoring circuit is permanently shorted. The entire PCM will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a Case IH dealer.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • PCM Internal Backup Battery

Must be replaced every 5 years per OEM service life guidelines.

  • Precision Control Module (PCM) Assembly

Required if the internal circuit board is shorted. Must be ordered specific to the machine's serial number for proper AFS Connect provisioning.
