520204-07 - VCM

Case IH 520204-07 - VCM – PVED-CLS: EH-main spool monitoring. EH spool position greater than set-point.

Issue description

The electro-hydraulic (EH) main spool inside the steering valve is out of control, meaning its physical position is greater than the commanded set-point. This indicates a severe mechanical issue where the spool is not responding correctly to the controller's inputs, is failing to return to neutral at startup, or is mechanically binding/out of adjustment.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac series (e.g., 350, 370, 385, 485, 500, 550, 580, 600, 620)
  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the hydraulic steering valve block and the PVED-CLS controller for physical damage, loose mounting screws, or disconnected harnesses.

  2. Check for hydraulic fluid contamination, as debris in the hydraulic fluid is a primary cause of a sticking EH-main spool.

  3. Ensure that the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) and the SASA (Steering Angle Sensor Absolute) on the steering column are properly connected and have not lost calibration.

  4. Use the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or Danfoss PLUS+1 service tool to read out the identification data and verify if the spool is failing to find neutral specifically at power-up.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Safely shut down the machine and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the steering circuit.

  2. Isolate the Valve

Locate the AccuGuide steering valve assembly (typically mounted near the articulation joint on 4WD tractors or under the cab on row-crop tractors).

  3. Flush the System

If the spool is sticking due to hydraulic contamination, the steering circuit must be flushed and hydraulic filters replaced before installing new components to prevent immediate failure of the new valve.

  4. Replace the PVED-CLS Module or Valve

If the mechanical binding is isolated to the actuator, remove the mounting screws and replace the PVED-CLS module. If the main spool inside the valve body is scored or permanently jammed, the entire AccuGuide steering valve assembly must be replaced.

  5. Reassembly

Install the new module or valve using new port seals/O-rings to prevent leaks.

  6. Calibration & Safety Validation

After replacing the PVED-CLS or steering valve, you must perform safety validation steps. Connect the diagnostic tool, navigate to the 'Auto Steering Calibration Mode,' and run the automated calibration to map the new steering device and ensure the spool correctly identifies neutral.
