Case IH 520208-31 - VCM – VCM / UCM: Steering valve controller internal fault
Issue description
The electrohydraulic steering valve controller has detected an internal failure or has been forced into a safe state by a peer safety controller via SPI.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series
- Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Series
- Case IH Optum AFS Connect Series
Check the cause
Check for peer fault codes in the VCM/UCM that may be forcing the steering controller into a safe state
Bleed the steering system by turning the steering wheel fully left, then fully right, a minimum of 10 times to remove air
Inspect the cable harness and connectors going to the steering valve control unit (PVED-CLS) for shorts, water ingress, or damaged pins
Verify software versions of the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and Steering Redundant Controller (SRC) (version 2.02 / part 51631896 is known stable)
Repair steps
Resolve Associated Codes
Diagnose and clear any other active codes in the VCM/UCM.
Software Flash
If no wiring faults are found and the code is isolated, flash/update the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) to the latest software dataset using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Replace the Controller/Valve
If the internal fault is a hard failure (hardware failure inside the PVED-CLS module), the steering valve controller module or the entire steering valve assembly must be replaced.
Perform Calibration
After replacing the valve or controller, perform a steering calibration routine on an on-road surface (unpainted concrete or asphalt) to ensure proper friction, and ensure the steering valve is supplied with sufficient oil flow during the routine.
