520213-02 - VCM

Case IH 520213-02 - VCM – UCM / VCM: Steering valve controller internal fault

Issue description

Severe internal hardware or software failure within the steering valve's dedicated controller. Often triggered by SPI communication connection loss, an SPI message queue overflow, or a RAM-code test failure.

Applies to these machines

Check the cause

  1. Bleed the Steering System: Turn the steering wheel fully left and fully right a minimum of 10 times to bleed all air from the steering system.

  2. Check for Software Updates: Verify if the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) software needs to be flashed/updated to version 2.02 (Software Part Number: 51631896) using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  3. Verify Wiring and Voltage: Check the harness connecting the UCM to the steering valve. Ensure there are no shorts to ground or power, voltage mismatches, or overvoltage on the steering valve controller circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic pressure before servicing the steering valve.

  2. Disconnect the Battery

Manually trip the circuit breaker or disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during module replacement.

  3. Replace the UCM / Steering Valve Controller

Locate the UCM/VCM (usually in the cab or under the right-hand console). Disconnect the multi-pin OEM connectors and remove the module. If the fault is isolated to the Danfoss PVED-CLS valve controller mounted on the steering valve itself, unbolt the controller from the hydraulic valve body.

  4. Reinstall and Reconnect

Install the new module and securely click the CAN-bus connectors into place.

  5. EST Configuration

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). The new UCM/VCM must be configured to the tractor's specific equipment profile (e.g., transmission type, grid heater presence, steering ratios) so the tractor recognizes the new module.

  6. Calibration

Perform an on-road steering calibration on an unpainted concrete or asphalt surface. Ensure the steering valve is supplied by sufficient oil flow during the calibration routine.
