Case IH 520213-11 - VCM – UCM: Steering valve controller internal fault
Issue description
The controller responsible for managing the electronic steering valve has detected an internal hardware failure, a software logic error (such as an interpolation overflow, division by zero, or initialization failure), or a critical internal voltage mismatch.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
- Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Series
- Case IH Puma / Optum Series
Check the cause
Perform a hard reset by turning off the battery disconnect switch or removing the negative battery terminal for at least one minute to clear temporary logic glitches.
Check the software versions of the UCM and the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the UCM and the steering valve for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion that could short the CAN-bus lines.
Verify that the UCM and Steering Valve Controller are receiving a stable 12V supply, as voltage spikes or drops can trigger internal fault codes.
Repair steps
Safely Park the Machine
Park on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Disconnect Power
Turn off the master battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical arcing.
Flash/Update Software (If Applicable)
If the EST indicates outdated software, re-flash the UCM and SVC to the latest software version (e.g., SVC software version 2.02 or newer). If the code clears, the repair is complete.
Access the Module
If the code persists, locate the UCM / Steering Valve Controller (usually located in the cab electronics bay or near the steering valve block, depending on the exact tractor model).
Replace the Controller
Disconnect the multi-pin OEM connectors from the faulty module. Unbolt the module from its mounting bracket and install the replacement unit.
Reconfigure and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH EST. You must upload the correct tractor configuration file (e.g., Advanced Steering Configuration controller dataset) to the new module.
Steering Calibration
Perform the automated steering valve calibration procedure via the EST or the AFS Pro display to teach the new controller the steering angle limits and valve deadbands.
