Case IH 520217-25 - VCM – VCM: Steering valve controller steering wheel sensor disagreement
Issue description
The steering wheel sensor speed crosscheck between the steering valve's main controller and safety controller has failed. The system detects that the primary and redundant signals from the steering wheel sensor deviate too much from each other, or their transmit rates do not match, triggering a severe failure state in the auto-guidance or steering system.

Check the cause
Verify the active 520217-25 fault code in the VCM using a diagnostic tool.
Inspect the steering wheel sensor and its wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
Monitor I/O values using the diagnostic tool to check if primary and redundant signals deviate significantly when turning the steering wheel.
Check CAN bus communication lines for timeout or message sequence errors.
Perform a steering angle sensor calibration to see if the sensor is simply out of calibration.
Repair steps
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect battery power.
Locate the steering wheel sensor / steering angle sensor on the steering column or steering articulation joint.
Location varies by model.
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.
Remove the mounting hardware securing the sensor and remove the faulty unit.
Install the new OEM steering wheel sensor and secure it with the mounting hardware.
Reconnect the electrical harness connector.
Turn on the machine's ignition and connect the diagnostic tool.
Perform the mandatory steering angle sensor calibration / reset procedure.
This is crucial to synchronize the new sensor with the VCM and steering valve controller.
Clear the 520217-25 fault code from the VCM memory.
Test drive the machine and verify that the auto-guidance and steering systems operate correctly without triggering the fault code.
