Case IH 520218-25 - VCM – UCM / VCM: Steering valve controller configuration error in auxiliary device

Issue description

This code indicates a configuration mismatch or communication error between the tractor's Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and an auxiliary device on the CAN bus (such as an external guidance system, ISOBUS Class 3 steering controller, or the AFS Pro display). The system detects that the steering valve controller is receiving incorrect configuration data or is not properly calibrated to interface with the auxiliary auto-guidance device.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Vestrum CVX Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that both the Wheel Angle Sensor and the Steering Valve calibration have been successfully performed via the AFS Pro 700 or Pro 1200 display

  2. Check ISOBUS and auxiliary connections on the ISOBUS diagnostic page to verify that the steering mode is correctly reading 'GPS – ISO'

  3. Verify the software versions of the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and the Advanced Steering Configuration controller dataset for mismatches

  4. Check for accompanying CAN bus communication errors or wheel angle sensor mismatch codes (e.g., 520227-25 or 520228-22) indicating physical wiring issues

Repair steps

  1. Perform a Steering Valve Calibration

Park the machine on a flat, open surface. Access the calibration menu on the AFS Pro display (CALIBRATION > NAV). Initiate the steering valve calibration. The combine/tractor will turn its wheels automatically during this process to test directional flow and limits. Perform one coarse calibration followed by three fine calibrations.

  2. Reconfigure the Auxiliary Device

If an aftermarket or auxiliary guidance system was recently installed, perform a factory reset on the auxiliary controller. Re-initialize the system and ensure the tractor's UCM/VCM recognizes the device on the CAN bus.

  3. Update Controller Datasets

Using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), flash the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and the UCM/VCM with the latest software and Advanced Steering Configuration dataset (e.g., dataset version 3.2 or newer).

  4. Replace the Steering Valve Controller

If software updates and calibrations fail to clear the active 520218-25 code, the internal logic of the steering valve controller may be corrupted, requiring physical replacement of the steering valve assembly.
