Case IH 520228-09 - VCM – VCM: Communication error or mismatch between the steering valve controller and the wheel angle sensor (WAS)

Issue description

The system relies on the wheel angle sensor to determine the exact physical position of the front wheels. When communication is lost or the signal is implausible, the automated steering system (such as AFS AccuGuide) cannot function safely, and the system will disable auto-guidance features.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wheel angle sensor mounted on the front axle (often near the steering cylinder or kingpin). Check the physical linkage/rod connecting the sensor to the steering mechanism to ensure it is not bent, disconnected, or packed with debris.

  2. Disconnect the 3-pin connector at the wheel angle sensor. Inspect for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  3. Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the VCM. Test for continuity, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.

  4. Verify that the sensor is receiving its 5-volt reference and ground from the controller.

  5. Using the Pro 1200 display (or equivalent diagnostic tool), navigate to the ISObus diagnostic page. Turn the steering wheel manually and observe if the steering angle sensor values change. If the values remain static or blank, the sensor or harness is dead.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the wheel angle sensor assembly on the front axle steering cylinder. (Note: On certain Flagship combines, the sensor is built internally into the steering cylinder, requiring a different repair approach, but on most tractors, it is externally mounted).

  3. Remove the Linkage

    Unbolt the short or long linkage arm connecting the sensor to the tie-rod/axle.

  4. Dismount the Sensor

    Remove the retaining hardware (e.g., 10-24 slotted hex screws or 13mm bolts) and remove the sensor body and O-rings.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Mount the new wheel angle sensor body, ensuring any O-rings or retaining rings are properly seated. Reattach the linkage arm.

  6. Reconnect Wiring

    Plug the 3-pin weatherproof connector back into the sensor harness.

  7. Calibration

    Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor. You must perform a Wheel Angle Sensor and Steering Valve calibration via the in-cab display (e.g., Pro 1200) so the VCM can learn the new sensor's center, left-lock, and right-lock voltage limits.
